Good news for USP School of Business and Management students as the discipline of Tourism and Hospitality Management was ranked among the top 151-200 Hospitality and Tourism Management Schools in the latest rankings from Shanghai.
Director of the School of Business and Management, Professor Gurmeet Singh says reaching the top 151-200 rank is a great achievement and he is proud of his staff and student researchers at the business school and management, who despite budget constraints had worked hard publishing in leading travel journals.
He says their research publications have contributed immensely to earning this prestigious ranking.
The deputy director of the School of Research, Innovation and Postdoctoral Affairs, Professor Stephen Pratt, explains that there were about half a dozen university ranking systems that had different criteria while others International ranking systems were based on different indicators such as industry, school perceptions, teaching key performance indicators and where some were more heavily based on research key performance indicators.
Professor Pratt says this one is quite research based and it is a good achievement for the school to publish and it is not just their discipline because other schools are doing tourism research.
He adds that tourism is very multidisciplinary, so some people in the discipline of management write articles on tourism and publish tourism journals while some economists from the School of Accounting Finance and Economics also do research on tourism. tourism economy.
USP reports that in 2017 and 2018 USP Tourism and Hospitality Management made no rankings, in 2019 Tourism and Hospitality Management ranked between 201 and 300 and did not return the following year.
However, in 2021, the school ranked between 201 and 300 and further improved its ranking this year between 151 and 200.
Professor Pratt acknowledged the hardworking staff who have helped the University reach this milestone which has seen USP grow from a primarily teaching university to one excelling in research.
In addition to this achievement, it was pointed out that USP Political Science also made the latest Shanghai Ranking between 301 and 400.
