US ambassador hopes for political stability in Sri Lanka

US Ambassador to Colombo Julie Chung said yesterday that the United States hoped the government, including the new prime minister, would be able to achieve political stability and overcome the current economic crisis.

The Ambassador also stressed the need to carry out the political reforms desired by the people and to safeguard democracy in the country.

The US envoy made the remarks when she met President Mahinda Yaya Abeywardena at the Parliament Complex yesterday.

Ambassador Chung said she hoped the government, including the new prime minister, would be able to establish political stability and overcome the current economic crisis.

The Ambassador also stressed the need to carry out the political reforms desired by the people and to safeguard democracy in the country.

Julie Chung further said that she hopes to strengthen relations between the two countries through the Sri Lanka-US Parliamentary Friendship Association.

She also appreciated the role played by the Caucus of Women Parliamentarians and mentioned the need to increase the representation of women.

The President also expressed his gratitude to the United States of America for their continued support in strengthening democracy in Sri Lanka.

This is Chung’s first meeting with President Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena since her appointment as US Ambassador to Sri Lanka. The Secretary General of Parliament, Dhammika Dasanayake, was also present
