Tripoli: The Under-Secretary General and Coordinator of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Raisedon Zenenga on Wednesday reaffirmed the important role of political parties in building a democratic system in Libya.
Zenenga made his remarks during a meeting with leaders and representatives of the country’s political parties to hear their views on the upcoming elections.
“The participants expressed the importance of holding elections to meet the aspirations of the Libyan people for a stable Libya,” the UN mission said in a statement.
Some of the participants expressed concerns about the need for greater inclusion in the electoral framework and the importance of reaching consensus, with the help of the UN and international partners, to ensure acceptance. election results by all, as well as the need to ensure the safety of candidates and voters, the statement said.
Zenenga reaffirmed the important role of political parties in efforts to build a democratic political system in Libya, and reaffirmed that UNSMIL’s priority is to help Libya hold elections that unite Libyans, ensure stability and produce legitimate institutions acceptable to all Libyans, the statement added.
Libya is expected to hold general elections on December 24 this year, as part of a roadmap adopted by the UN-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.
