UMSL cuts study programs in anthropology, mathematics, physics and political science | Education

Students from eliminated programs will be allowed to complete their studies.

“Although it was a difficult discussion and decision, I have no doubts that this is the right way forward for our students and our community,” Sobolik wrote in a message to the UMSL campus last month.

No full professor has lost jobs in the downsizing process, and the university has not released any figures on budget savings resulting from the cuts. More than half of UMSL faculty and staff suffered pay cuts of up to 10% last year due to the financial crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The strength of UMSL’s physics program, according to professors at the University of Washington, lies in its accessibility and affordability for local students. Washington U. astrophysicists have used equipment unique to UMSL, including an atomic-resolution microscope, and the private university is recruiting physics students from UMSL into its graduate program, according to the letter.

“Eliminating the physics department would drastically reduce UMSL’s reputation and reduce opportunities for STEM (science / tech / engineering / mathematics) research and training in the St. Louis area. We hope that the UMSL administration will reconsider the economic and educational basis of its decision, ”the letter said.

As part of the process to meet demand from students and industry, UMSL has added over the past five years new bachelor’s programs in international relations, actuarial sciences, cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, computer technology, leadership. organizational, sports management and applied psychology of children’s rights studies. . The university also added master’s degree programs in cybersecurity, supply chain, and analytics.
