The preliminary results of the State Duma elections confirmed the stability of the Russian political system and popular support for the president, the president of the Federation Council (upper house), Valentina Matviyenko, said on Wednesday at the first meeting of the autumn session of Parliament.
“Today we can say that the conduct of the electoral campaign and its preliminary results have confirmed the stability of our political system and the viability of the electoral system, and he also clarified that the people support the president’s policy aimed at ensuring the development of the country and the social turnaround in government policies that followed the adoption of constitutional amendments, ”Matviyenko stressed.
According to her, the elections show that the efforts of the country’s authorities correspond to the needs of the population. The President of the Federation Council called on all political forces to unite their efforts after the elections to achieve national development goals.
The elections to the Eighth Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament) took place over three days, on September 17, 18 and 19. With 100% of the results recorded, United Russia won 49.82% of the list vote, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) won 18.93%, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) won 7.55%, while A Just Russia – For Truth got 7.46% and New People 5.32%. In addition, United Russia candidates won 198 single-member constituencies, CPRF candidates won in nine, while candidates representing A Just Russia – For the Truth won eight. Five other single-member districts were occupied by independent candidates, two by the LDPR and the other three by Rodina, the Growth Party and the Civic Platform.
