Jo to err is human – in simple terms this means that it is normal for people to make mistakes. Mistakes are also made in the medical field. This alone does not mean that people in the health care system are bad or that the system is bad. It just means that people working in the system need to know more about patient safety and incorporate that knowledge into their routines.

It is imperative that healthcare professionals learn and understand patient safety in order to reduce medical errors and improve healthcare system design.

Why is it necessary? Experts say thousands of people die each year from medical errors in hospitals. That’s more than the people who die from car accidents or cancer. In fact, more people die each year from medication errors than from work-related accidents. In addition to financial cost and human tragedy, medical errors easily rise to the forefront of pressing and widespread public issues.

Over the years, patient safety has become a core topic in medical programs in Pakistan.

In 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic became a reality in Pakistan, the World Health Organization (WHO) pushed for recognition of the importance of patient safety and its integration into medical education. Today, more than 80 hospitals nationwide are part of the WHO Patient Safety Friendly Hospitals Initiative, which puts into practice a harmonized set of evidence-based patient safety standards that hospitals must adhere to ensure safer care. It provides a platform to integrate patient safety priorities where infection prevention and control, including hand hygiene and standard precautions, are essential elements.

In addition to doctors, nurses and technicians are essential to ensure quality care. They engage and empower patients to speak on their own behalf and further enforce hand hygiene measures with colleagues at all levels of the hospital hierarchy. Their role in patient safety cannot be ignored.

Many hospitals across the country now conduct regular trainings for both patients and health workers on hand hygiene.

At the Aga Khan University Hospital, there is a Center for Patient Safety which focuses on the study of conditions affecting patient care and promotes systemic patient safety, identifies medical errors and develops and implements prevention strategies.

Withdrawal: Today, more than 80 hospitals nationwide are part of the WHO Patient Safety Friendly Hospital Initiative, which puts into practice a harmonized set of evidence-based patient safety standards to which hospitals must join to ensure safer care. It offers a platform to integrate patient safety priorities where infection prevention and control, including hand hygiene and standard precautions, are essential elements.

According to the AKUH website, their goal is to help eliminate preventable harm and improve clinical outcomes for patients in hospital, and ultimately healthcare systems in low- and middle-income countries.

In Pakistan, Riphah International University and Martin Dow Group have been organizing International Patient Safety Conference every year since 2016. The aim of the conference is to provide safe and quality healthcare services to all patients in the Pakistan.

According to the spokesperson of the university, the idea behind the conference was to initiate and support the journey of patient safety in Pakistan. Top patient safety leaders from around the world, local stakeholders and healthcare professionals are invited to attend the conference each year to share their knowledge, expertise and experiences.

This year, the conference was held at Liaquat National Hospital (LNH) in Karachi. Topics covered at the conference included infection prevention and control, patient safety in dentistry, how to conduct implementation research, the future of healthcare, leadership in healthcare and the role of virtual reality in surgical training.

Dr Faisal Sultan, then Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Health, said the annual conference was a big step in starting conversations to encourage and improve patient safety in Pakistan. He added that patient safety was a serious public health issue that required immediate attention.

Speaking at the conference, Martin Dow Group Chairman Ali Akhai said, “The Martin Dow Group is dedicated to meeting the highest standards of patient well-being and all that comes with it. result. Since the beginning of our partnership with Riphah International University, we aim to raise the springboard for the development of patient-centered strategies”.

Patient safety

Here are some steps to follow to ensure patients have a safe experience.

– It is essential that you are on time for your appointments.

– Make sure you and your staff are aware of current standards and practices. It is important that your patient feels comfortable/confident when visiting your clinic.

– Make sure you are aware of all procedures and policies. You should know the rules and procedures of the clinic or hospital and follow them strictly. Your partners/other doctors you work with need to know what to do in an emergency. This will ensure that you don’t end up making treatment errors that could be dangerous or lead to serious injury.

– You must treat your patients with respect. Get to know your patients before you start treating them. This will ensure that they feel more comfortable with your practice and will be able to tell you anything that could cause problems down the road.
