The Department of European and International Studies is recruiting a Lecturer in politics/political economy with a specialization in Southern Europe and/or Latin America. The position is open in terms of theoretical and disciplinary background or research topic, the wish is for a cutting-edge scholarship exploring Southern Europe and/or Latin America. In particular, the post holder is expected to contribute to the completion of the BA European Studies, in particular its Spanish stream, and the BA European Politics. The incumbent will contribute to research-led teaching at the UG and PGT levels, help advance the department’s research culture and grant capture efforts, and work well with others in the department and across the board. school and faculty.

This position will be offered on a full-time, indefinite-term contract.

Main responsibilities

  • Contribute to the planning, organization and delivery of innovative teaching activities within the department and to the continuous development of study programs, in particular the BA in European Studies, in particular its course in Spanish, and the BA in European Politics. In Grade 7, design, develop and deliver a range of study programs.
  • Contribute fully to the development and improvement of the research profile of the department, school and college, including (6th year) establishing a high-quality publication record, (7th year) having a high-quality publication record quality.
  • Develop and maintain individual/joint research projects in subject related areas. In grade 7, contribute to the development of research strategies.
  • Mentor and train postgraduate students to ensure their effective development.
  • Act as a personal tutor for students.
  • Participate fully in the assessment and review process, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
  • Participate and develop internal and external networks. In Grade 7, lead and develop networks.
  • Conduct individual or collaborative research projects. In grade 7, act as principal researcher and project leader.
  • Contribute to the administrative tasks of the department, school, faculty and university.

1. PhD and first degree in a relevant subject (PhD submitted or completed at time of application)
2. Geographical specialization in Southern Europe and/or Latin America
3. Ability to engage in research-based teaching
4. University teaching experience
5. Clear potential for an excellent academic publication record
6. Good presentation and communication skills
7. Good organizational and administrative skills
8. Ability to supervise student research at BA, MA and PhD levels
9. Ability to provide support and guidance in the supervision and tutoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students


Grade 6 Desirable Criteria

1. Administrative experience
2. Experience of major research projects
3. Interest and experience in online, blended and distance learning



Grade 7 Essential Criteria
1. Doctorate and first degree in a relevant subject
2. Geographical specialization in Southern Europe and/or Latin America
3. Ability to engage in research-based teaching
4. University teaching experience
5. Excellent academic publication record
6. Good presentation and communication skills
7. Good organizational and administrative skills
8. Ability to supervise student research at BA, MA and PhD levels
