Lecturer in political economy (Middle East specialty)
The Department of Political Economy is inviting applications for a position as a Lecturer in Political Economy, with a focus on the Middle East. We encourage applicants with an interest in any branch of political economy in this field, including theoretical work and/or empirical work drawing on qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies. Applicants should be able to contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Department of Political Economy is a unique interdisciplinary enterprise located in the heart of London, close to politics and the city. Founded in 2010, the department is the only department dedicated to political economy in the UK. Teaching and research recognize that the disciplines of politics and economics are inextricably linked; it is not possible to fully understand political processes without exploring the economic context in which politics operates. Similarly, sound economic analysis requires an awareness of how resource allocation is conditioned by political institutions, historical context and ethical values, and how these have been understood by different traditions of social thought. In a world characterized by financial uncertainty, ecological insecurity and conflicting values, the links between political and economic processes are increasingly apparent and the need for a multifaceted appreciation of their workings has never been as big.

This position will be offered on a full-time, indefinite-term contract.
- Contribute to the planning, organization and delivery of teaching activities within the department in accordance with established departmental practices and ongoing curriculum development. In Grade 7, design, develop and deliver a range of study programs.
- Contribute fully to the development and improvement of the research profile of the department, school and college, including (6th year) establishing a high-quality publication record, (7th year) having a high-quality publication record quality.
- Develop and maintain individual/joint research projects in subject related areas. In grade 7, contribute to the development of research strategies.
- Mentor and train postgraduate students to ensure their effective development.
- Act as a personal tutor for students.
- Participate fully in the assessment and review process, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning
- Participate and develop internal and external networks. In Grade 7, lead and develop networks.
- Conduct individual or collaborative research projects. In grade 7, act as principal researcher and project leader.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department
Skills, knowledge and experience
1. Good first degree and PhD in a relevant subject (completed or submitted at time of application)
2. Academic specialty in political economy or any relevant field focused on the Middle East (see role profile)
3. Ability to engage in research-based teaching
4. University teaching experience
5. Clear potential for an excellent academic publication record
6. Good presentation and communication skills
7. Good organizational and administrative skills
8. Ability to supervise student research at BA, MA and PhD levels
9. Ability to provide support and guidance in the supervision and tutoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students
