0

Government College University has a heritage of a century and a half of educational excellence. Under the supervision of renowned vice-chancellors and insightful administrators, it has maintained its name on the list of Pakistan’s most prestigious institutes.

Although this whole university is a esteemed educational institution, some departments are more reputable than others. The Department of Political Science is one of them.

If you know someone who is interested in political science, you also learn about their desire to study the subject from the GCU department. Well, is it the legacy and countless years of education that make him so famous? To a certain extent, yes. But the students have a different point of view. They attribute the credit for its fame to various factors. Also, they have a lot to tell about this department that can never be observed from the outside. Here’s what being a student in this department looks like and what are the reasons for its great name.

Department of Political Science and its students

Without a doubt, when we see a department flourish, the credit goes to its faculty and administration. But this is not always the case. Speaking of GCU’s political science department, its students have a huge role to play in giving it a big name.

It is very difficult to get admission in this department. Hundreds and thousands of people from across the country apply and take his entrance test. Only a few (less than 50) who pass the test are lucky enough to be part of this institute. Thus, the students who come here already have a good overview of political issues, current events and knowledge of social dynamics.

In addition, many graduates of this department are now CSS or PMS agents, and many hold other notable positions in the country. This especially adds to its fame and the reason why students want to be a part of it.

“The students go through a competition and that’s why this department is different from other Pol universities. Science departments, ”said Haider Butt, a recent graduate and renowned political activist, when asked how this department is different from others.

A healthy place to talk

Another thing that is unique about GCU, especially its political science department, is healthy political speech. This is very rare in Pakistan and no matter what a university claims it does not give people the opportunity to have a different and independent ideology that is not followed by the mainstream. GCU is one of the rarest places in this country where such debates take place and different ideas are discussed. However, he does not give his students the full autonomy that he should but he is better than many others.

Butt, speaking on it, said, “The classroom environment is very tolerant. We also have debates outside the classroom and it is very productive. We are faced with a battle of ideas here and this is what helps us to improve our knowledge and our thinking skills. ‘

Another final year bachelor student said: “To study subjects like political science, we need to have healthy discussions involving people with different beliefs and ideas. In GCU, we get this environment in our classrooms, cafes, lawns and libraries.

However, changing policies are now trying to stop such debates and discourage students from participating in such political discussions and activities. “Students who are more active in such discussions and in sound student policy are now victimized by faculty and administrators, but this tradition of learning and critical thinking in GCU cannot be stopped very easily,” said Haider Butt as he spoke about the challenges he faced when he raised his voice for student rights.

Faculty of the department

The faculty of the department has now become a controversial point to discuss. Many famous lecturers among the students, accustomed to encouraging political debates and participating in different study circles, were expelled by the department. Ahmad Hayat and Zaigham Abbas are those two names.

The students still remember them both and they want them back. “Ahmad Hayat was very indulgent with the students. He was always well prepared for his lectures and was an educated person. Instead of focusing on moral policing and student discipline, he focused on engaging us with different ideas, ”Butt said.

Speaking of Zaigham Abbas, a current student in the department said, “We used to have very productive lectures with him. His teaching method was truly amazing and we couldn’t help but participate in the discussion about the topics he was teaching. He made us think critically about every simple and complicated idea.

However, the current staff is also made up of lecturers and scholarly professors, but none of them are as famous among the students as the previous few. Other names among them are Usman Siddiqui and Fouzia Ghani.

Department of Political Science and Political Activism

Usually you are encouraged to put what you learn into practice. Political science is an amazing field which, if practiced correctly, can bring about the constructive changes that are needed in society. It’s so ironic that the political science department doesn’t encourage its students to get involved politically. The enlightened still continue their activism despite resistance from their institute. They are also the reason why this department is considered a great place of learning for students.

GCU’s political science department has become a place where students are brought to learn new political ideas, reflect on them and discuss them, but when they start to implement them they are demoralized and victimized in different ways. . In some cases, they are kicked out.

A healthy environment where students can choose to have an independent ideology and pursue it (until it does not harm the lives of others) is necessary for learning. It is the essence of a democratic system and a place that has been created for it.

Well, this department of GCU is fighting the battles of freedom and policing. Maybe this discourse is what makes it such a different place where students and teachers are enlightened enough to challenge the system.

However, the department now offers all degree programs including bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate, and political science degrees. You can check their website for more details on admissions.
