Please join us for an in-person talk to celebrate Professor Ken Kollman at Weiser Hall on Tuesday, September 21 at 4:00 p.m.

Many people have intense concerns about the future of American democracy. They should care less about the long-term survival of democracy and, like parties and politicians, focus more on winning the next round of elections. The partisanship that seems to be hardening in our society is in fact a source of stability and predictability, and it gives people a stake in the results of the elections. The major parties, contrary to popular belief, remain moderating forces. Admittedly, electoral norms and institutions are under threat, but they are stronger than many people think, and if people focus on winning elections and adopting policies, and care less about the damage than others might do, American democracy will survive very well.
