ROANOKE, Virginia – As the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001 approaches, 10 News will share stories about this dark day and its long-term impacts throughout the week.

Veterans, active-duty military personnel and Americans across the country are preparing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of September 11, a day that has shaped the country forever, especially when it comes to international conflicts.

“September 11 was a game-changer for the United States in that the unprecedented attack, but you know, in Washington and New York, basically sent shockwaves through the political system,” the Dr Mehrzad Boroujerdi, director of the School of Public and International Affairs at Virginia Tech.

One of his specialties is politics in the Middle East, which he says underwent a significant change after the attack on American soil.

“They hit the United States. It is a country that had been secured on both sides by two huge bodies of water and with the exception of Pearl Harbor, there has never been an attack on the homeland. So for the Americans, it was a wake-up call, ”said Boroujerdi.

One of the most significant results of September 11 was the war in Afghanistan, the longest war in US history.

“I don’t think the fault can be blamed solely on President Biden. This has been a problem in the making, it is only the fourth president to have inherited this issue. So now the United States is faced with the question of what to do next, ”Boroujerdi said.

With the Taliban retaining control, Boroujerdi said Americans should closely monitor decisions made over the next year regarding the Middle East conflict.
